Klarna’s 700-agent chatbot had a sequel.
The most-quoted AI support stat in the world is only half the story. If you pitch a human-to-agent ratio, tell both halves.
The number: 700 full-time agents’ worth of work, claimed in month one. Then Klarna started hiring humans again.
Part one: February 2024
In its first month, Klarna’s AI assistant, built on OpenAI, handled 2.3 million conversations. That was two-thirds of all Klarna’s customer service chats, and Klarna called it "the equivalent work of 700 full-time agents."
Average resolution time fell from 11 minutes to under 2, repeat inquiries fell 25%, and Klarna estimated a $40M profit improvement for 2024.
“This AI breakthrough in customer interaction means superior experiences for our customers at better prices, more interesting challenges for our employees, and better returns for our investors.”
Part two: May 2025
Fifteen months later Klarna was hiring human agents again, this time through a flexible, Uber-style remote model. The CEO’s framing had moved from volume to quality, and to a guarantee that a customer can always reach a person.
Klarna’s Q2 2026 results don’t report AI-assistant or support-headcount metrics at all.
“Really investing in the quality of the human support is the way of the future for us.”
What it means for operators
Deflection shows how many conversations the agent took. It doesn’t show how many it should have handed to a person. The operators who hold up in a review measure repeat contacts, escalation quality and time-to-human, not just the share of chats the bot handled.
- Report repeat-contact rate next to deflection, every week.
- Make the route to a person obvious, and test it the way a frustrated customer would.
- Plan the human tier as flexible capacity, not a leftover.
